The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to work collaboratively with animal staff and others to deliver the Durrell Conservation strategy by to maintaining a comprehensive zoological information system, providing accurate and timely information essential to the operations of the animal collection, organising and coordinating animal imports and exports.

Work Experience Placements

Work Experience Placements

Durrell is delighted to be able to offer a number of work experience placements
which will give you a unique understanding of working for an international
conservation organisation.

There is the chance to develop your skills across a variety of departments at Durrell,
including the mammal, bird, herpetology, lab and veterinary, education and marketing
# departments.

There is also the opportunity to complete research projects and dissertations during
your placement.

A placement at Durrell will provide valuable experience to add to your CV showing
future employers that you are committed to a career in the conservation sector.

We will be taking applications from mid-September 2018 for:

• Summer placements (minimum eight weeks) - Flexible starting May/June 2019 to

September 2019.

• Short-term placements (minimum eight weeks) - Flexible starting to September

2019 to May/June 2020
Long-term placements (9-12 months) - Flexible starting 1st September 2019 to
August 2020.

Permanent / Contract:  Fixed-term (minimum 6 months)

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and independent person to support a major conservation programme located in the Galapagos Archipelago. The Mitigation Project Officer will work closely with local partners Island Conservation and the Galapagos National Park to establish a set of captive management trials for highly threatened finch species ahead of a major island-wide invasive species eradication programme, due to start in 2020. The role will trial the effectiveness of different holding and management approaches for these birds with the aim of preparing a series of recommendations for holding birds that could be at risk of secondary poisoning during the eradication phase.

This is an exciting opportunity that will require someone with hands-on experience of captive animal management, good field skills and experience working within tropical island ecosystems. The successful candidate will be bilingual and will be stationed primarily in the sparsely populated island of Floreana with regular travel to Santa Cruz. The project officer will also be responsible for training two local counterpart technicians who will support the management and running of the aviaries.

The role, through support provided by Galapagos Conservation Trust, is currently confirmed for six months, with a likely extension to one year (funding dependent). If successful and funding is available our aim is to extend the position for a further two years.

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to promote the Trust's work in the captive breeding of endangered species by working on the daily management of the animal collection and to ultimately play a crucial role in fulfilling Durrell’s mission of saving species from extinction.

§   The role will include the daily husbandry (maintaining high standards of cleanliness in animal enclosures, public viewing areas and “off view” facilities as well as the preparation and distribution of food to the animals following prescribed diets) of a diverse collection of Birds in conjunction with the other section staff;

§   To deliver regular public engagement activities, including keeper talks as required, about the animals on site to provide accurate, current and in-depth information relating to the breadth of conservation work of the Trust;

§   Detailed record keeping;

§   Research;

§   Training of visiting students;

§   Behind the scenes tours and participation in wider Bird and zoo activities as required.

The Candidate

§   It is desired that applicants have a BSc (Hons) Zoology or related qualification and proven experience in the successful husbandry of a variety of Bird species (in other zoos, museums, universities, private collections, etc.);

§   Wide knowledge of biology, ecology and captive requirements of animal species for which post is responsible;

§   A logical, precise and consistent approach to animal keeping is required as is competency with standard computer software;

§   Good written and verbal communication skills and considerable interpersonal skills are essential as the position involves interaction not just with colleagues but also students, visitors and on occasion the media;

§   The successful applicant will be a strong team player able to maintain a high work rate, high levels of cleanliness and an organised work environment.
