Blackpool Zoo is one of the UK’s most established medium sized zoos, and in recent years the zoo has gone through a rapid modernisation and development process.

An opportunity has arisen for an Education and Research Officer to join our education team as the department expands into the next exciting phase of Blackpool Zoo’s development.

The individual should be passionate about research and conservation and driven to develop Blackpool Zoo’s research department. Promoting & growing Blackpool Zoo’s profile and reputation in the field of research and conservation.

Duties of the role include being responsible for the departments research programme alongside supervising a team of Student Research Assistants. The role also involves the development and delivery of the public talk’s programmes, presenting lessons to schools, hosting practical learning programmes, keeper courses, and animal experiences.

We are looking for a proactive individual with proven people skills gained from previous research experience. Flexibility and an innovative approach are essential due to the multi-faceted nature of the department.

The successful candidate should be educated to degree level. They should also have previous experience of animal research. They will need to demonstrate excellent time management and planning skills, possess a high level of verbal and written communication skills and it is essential that they are experienced in the use of all key Microsoft packages.

A unique opportunity has arisen for a Senior Education Officer to join our zoo and offers huge scope and potential to support the education department into the next exciting phase in Blackpool Zoo’s future for the right candidate.

Duties of the role include the development and delivery of the animal experiences and talk’s programmes, presenting talks to schools and bespoke learning groups, keeper courses, curriculum linked lessons, outreach programme, work placement programmes, zoo research, conversation, interpretation as well as sustainability monitoring and implementation.

You will be expected to lead and work as part of a team. The role will also involve sharing best practice and promoting & growing Blackpool Zoo’s profile and reputation in the field of education and conservation.

They will need to demonstrate excellent time management and planning skills, possess a high level of verbal and written communication skills and it is essential that they are experienced in the use of all key Microsoft packages.

 An in-depth knowledge of zoos and their operation would be advantageous.

Section Head – Animal Events


Section Head – Animal Events

 Permanent – Full time – 40 hours per week (annualised).
Due to the internal restructuring of the Animal Department a unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced ‘Animal Events’ Section Head to join our zoo and offers scope and potential to lead the Events team into the next phase in Blackpool Zoos future.
The role dictates that a ‘hands on’ approach will be required and an emphasis on coaching of individuals and team building is essential. You will need to be able to manage and prioritize a diverse workload and have problem solving skills. 

As well as being responsible for your section, you will also be part of the Senior Animal Management team within the zoo. In this role, you will help to develop and move forward the animal department in a new and exciting time within Blackpool Zoo’s history.

You will need to demonstrate a public focused attitude with a clear understanding of the important role within the zoo that our interactive & informative displays have on our visitors, by delivering the Zoos Education & Conservation messages through a well presented display you can help influence in excess of 500,000 visitors per year and contribute to the continued success of our associated in-situ conservation projects linked to these displays.
As well as being skilled in training new behavior’s (various taxa) you will have excellent presentation skills and will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable.

The section currently maintains a large breeding group of Californian Sea Lions and a number of display birds including, Bird of Prey, small & large parrots and several small mammal species. As the lead member of the Events team, you will be responsible for planning and presenting both the sea lion and bird displays and facilitating public meet and greets with a range of animals.

 A minimum of 6 years zoo keeping experience with at least 4 years presenting and animal training experience in a similar environment, plus proven people management skills and the DMZAA course, or equivalent, are essential.

A full driving license is essential.

Permanent – Part time – 20 hours per week (annualised)
Blackpool Zoo is one of the UK’s most established medium sized zoos, and in recent years the zoo has gone through a rapid modernisation and development process.

A unique opportunity has arisen at Blackpool Zoo for an experienced Animal Presenter/Trainer to join our Animal Event’s team assisting in the daily care, husbandry needs and presentation of our displays. They will also help in developing and moving forward the section within the framework of the animal department's aims and objectives in a new and exciting period within Blackpool Zoo’s history.
The section currently maintains a large breeding group of Californian Sea Lion and a number of display birds including owls, Bird of Prey, small & large parrots and some small mammals.
The successful Candidate will be an excellent communicator with proven presentation skills. Customer service will be key to this role and you must have an excellent understanding of the principals involved and how to interact with our visitors to ensure a memorable experience.
A minimum of 4 years presenting and animal training experience in a similar environment and the DMZZA course or equivalent are essential. Experience of working with a wide range of animal taxa would be advantageous. Proven success in Animal training or an appropriate qualification in the use of positive reinforcement training would be beneficial. You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable.
We offer a competitive salary of £18,695 per annum pro rata and the opportunity to further your career within the zoological world.
